For all of us who grew up with and fell in love with the Harry Potter series, the characters have always seemed to have felt like family. Maybe we recognized ourselves in some of them, maybe we could related to their struggles and triumphs.

But over the years, some of our favorite characters have come and gone throughout the series and we’ve lost touch with their whereabouts. Some have chosen to stay out of the limelight, others have chosen different career paths altogether.

We’ve compiled a list of some of the most unforgettable actors in the Potter series so you can see for yourself what they’ve been up to!

1. Neville Longbottom

There is no denying that Matthew’s roles in Harry Potter were among our favorites. But what’s even more memorable is how much of a transformation the young star has made over the years from average teen to outright hunk. After Potter, Matthew hit the stage in Unfaithful as well as tv roles in Ripper Street and Happy Valley.

2. Rubeus Hagrid

With tons of television roles in the ’80s and ’90s, most noticeably Cracker, and also two stints in James Bond films, the Scottish actor is widely remembered for being a guiding force with his special friendship with young Harry. Gigs since Harry have been starring roles in Great Expectations, Effie and Lord Dingwall’s voice in the 2012 film Brave.

Maggie Smith is one of the most classically trained actresses of our time. The British actress, and breast cancer survivor, has maintained an incredible career in both television and film. Her most memorable role after Potter? Downton Abbey, for which she won a Golden Globe, two Emmys and a Screen Actors Guild award. She’s also a two-time Oscar Winner.

5. Vincent Crabbe

In 2009, Jamie decided to part ways with the Harry Potter series. His life took a decidedly different turn when he was jailed in 2011 for stolen goods and again for two years in 2012 in connection with “violent disorder” in the London riots.

6. Albus Dumbledore

Michael Gambon

Michael Gambon achieved iconic status for his role as Professor Dumbledore in the Potter series. After his stint as Hogwarts Headmaster, the Irish actor went on to star in The King’s Speech, which won an Oscar for Best Picture in 2010. He has since retired from acting.

7. Luna Lovegood

Evanna Lynch

Who could forget the quirky and adorable Luna Lovegood character in the Potter series? Known as one of the “big seven” characters, Irish actress Evanna has transformed her career and dedicates a lot of her time to charity work for organizations like the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland. She loves being able to help others in need.
